A Bench in the Sun

Theatre West Van’s Spring production and entry into the North Shore Zone Festival is Ron Clark’s heart-warming comedy, “A Bench in the Sun”.

This simple story of two old fogies in a retirement home, bickering about the mundane life they lead only to find a new topic of bickering — an aging movie star that “moves” — provides many a hearty laugh.

Burt is a crotchety cynic who remains in his pajamas all day so he won’t have to keep undressing when he takes his frequent naps.  A former accountant, he has spent his life with one woman and one job.

Harold is a dapper dandy in a suit and bow tie.  He is an eternal optimist despite his three failed marriages, five failed businesses, and children who won’t speak to him.  His life has been “an endless array of adventures”, he says. Harold and Burt are perfectly mismatched.

Adrienne is a glamorous former movie star.  Harold falls instantly in love with her:  “Movie stars don’t age, they just grow more mysterious,” he says.  “I’ll bet those aren’t her teeth,” Burt responds.
